Supporting the Whole Child Through Extracurricular Activities

Let's explore how extracurricular activities support whole-child development and academic growth through intentional parenting.

Part 3: Supporting Your Child’s Mind, Body, and Emotional Growth Through Intentional Activities

If you have been following along, one thing should be clear: extracurricular activities are not just about keeping our kids busy or helping them succeed in one specific area. They are about supporting the whole child. In Part 1, we explored the value of community and how these experiences create connection, belonging, and support systems for both our children and our families. Part 2, focused on the investment and how the return shows up through executive functioning skills that carry into adulthood. In today’s post, we bring it all together, because when you step back and really look at it, extracurricular activities touch every part of our children’s well-being, physically, mentally, emotionally, and academically.

Physical Wellness: Movement That Matters

The first thing that comes to mind when parents mention extracurricular activities is sports. My kids are youth athletes. They play, train, and often attend camps that have a sports-based component. My stance is that, whether it is track, dance, cheer, swimming, or even recreational play, movement is essential for our children. In a world where screens compete for their attention daily, structured activities give them a reason to move with purpose. Moreover, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends regular physical activity for children to support healthy growth, improve cardiovascular health, and reduce the risk of long-term health conditions.

But beyond the data, we see it ourselves.

  • We see the energy they release.
  • We see the confidence they build in their bodies.
  • We see the pride they feel when they improve.

And for many kids, this becomes the foundation for lifelong healthy habits.

An Outlet that is Much Needed

Now let’s talk about something that often goes unspoken in this context, our children’s mental and emotional well-being.

We are raising kids in a world that looks very different from the one we grew up in. When I was a child, we had a ton of community activities. I participated in programs through the Boys and Girls Club, 4-H, and a ton of programs offered at my hometown’s college, and HBCU. I share about its impact on my academic journey in this blog post. Why I am Pursing my Doctorate in Business Administration – Career Mom Community. However, it also shaped me in terms of health and wellness. It was through the National Youth Sports Program on the college campus that I learned to swim and play the most popular sports. Fast forward to today, our children’s environment is not just shaped by school and home, but also by constant exposure to curated lives on social media, filtered realities, and now the growing presence of artificial intelligence, which shapes what they see, how they learn, and even how they compare themselves. Something that was not a thing during my upbringing. Today, the pressure is no longer occasional; it is continuous.

The research behind the assumptions…

Studies highlighted by the American Psychological Association have shown that increased social media exposure is linked to higher levels of anxiety, depression, and feelings of inadequacy among youth. This is largely driven by unrealistic comparisons and the pressure to measure up. There is no shortage of “kids” YouTube channels that impact our kids. I am a firm believer that real-world exposure to activities provides the balance our kids need. They should experience life for themselves, not just view it through the lens of social media.

At the same time, emerging research from the National Institutes of Health points to the impact of digital environments on attention, emotional regulation, and identity development, especially during critical adolescent years. Moreover, choosing environments where children are actively engaged, collaborating, and creating rather than consuming helps ground them in real experiences. This, in turn, strengthens their confidence, focus, and sense of identity in a world that is constantly shaping their perspective.

Academic Growth: What Happens Outside Shows Up Inside

One of the biggest surprises for many parents is how extracurricular activities actually support academic success, and I have seen this firsthand through my daughter’s love for cooking. It may seem like adding something like this to her schedule would take time away from school, but it has actually strengthened the skills she uses in the classroom.

To Wrap it Up

We’re Raising Whole, Healthy, Capable Children

When you look at the full picture, extracurricular activities are not just an addition to our children’s lives, or our own. Extracurricular activities are a powerful tool in shaping who they are becoming. Throughout this series, we have seen how they build community and connection, develop skills through intentional investment, and support the overall wellness of our children. Additionally, they help our kids develop holistically. And as moms, we get a front row seat to that growth, watching it unfold in real time.

This journey is not always easy. The schedules can be full and the days can feel long, but keep pushing. If we remember raising whole, healthy, capable individuals who are learning how to navigate life in meaningful ways, it makes the journey easier. Trust me. And when you look at it through that lens, it is always worth the investment.
