The True Investment of Extracurricular Activities: Building Skills That Last

The real investment behind extracurricular activities and why intentional parenting choices matter, knowing the long-term return extends far beyond money, scholarships, or immediate outcomes and shapes a child’s future success.

Part 2: The Benefits of Kids’ Extracurricular Activities

By: Dr. Debranetta, Mom, Strategist, Researcher, Chief of Staff

Part One of this series was such a meaningful one for me to write. It really took me down memory lane, reflecting on the community that has been built over the years through my children’s activities. I found myself thinking about that familiar saying, “it takes a village,” and in this season of life, I can honestly say it truly does. Nothing meaningful is built alone. Along the way, people enter our lives in different ways. Some for a season and others for a reason, and each connection adds something to the journey. But I digress. Today’s blog post may be a bit of a touchy subject. I am intentionally referring to extracurricular activities as an investment. Today, we’ll explore the investment of extracurricular activities and how the return shows up in the development of executive functioning skills that shape our children’s future success.

My basketball girly…

It’s More Than the Cost—It’s the Return

Extracurricular activities often come with a financial and time commitment. From registration fees to uniforms, travel, and long evenings, it can feel like a significant investment. There’s no shortage of memes and reels on social media from parent influencers, joking about their kids’ games as they watch their “mortgage payment run up and down the field”. Let’s keep it real, activities are costly. My children participate in Track and Field, and I’ve blogged about our journey in the past. We’ve traveled to some amazing places, but that comes with a cost. Everything from flights to hotel stays, admissions, and food. I’ve learned the true return isn’t measured in trophies or medals, it’s found in the life skills our children develop along the way. I am not the mom who will overextend myself financially so that my children can do “all the things”. I also understand that a lot of thought goes into balancing and juggling responsibilities with other financial commitments. It is not easy, and I wish I could blog about a secret formula that I researched and discovered. Apart from budgeting, planning ahead, and fundraising, I don’t have any other remedies.

Planning ahead might look like setting aside a monthly “activity fund,” researching programs early for early-bird discounts, or prioritizing one or two meaningful commitments instead of overloading the schedule. Planning also includes mapping out time, understanding practice schedules, travel expectations, and peak seasons to keep your family rhythm aligned. When we approach extracurricular activities with both purpose and preparation, we’re not just reacting to opportunities; we’re creating space for our children to fully benefit from them without overwhelming our household.

Pro Planning Tip

Pro Planning Tip: At the start of each season, create a simple “activity snapshot” in your planner that outlines total estimated costs, key dates, and weekly time commitments in one place. Keep track of where you document it. This gives you a clear picture upfront and helps you make confident decisions without surprises mid-season. Staying in constant communication with coaches is also helpful.

Executive Functioning: The Real Reward

One of the most powerful outcomes of extracurricular involvement is the development of executive functioning skills.

These include:

  • Planning and organization
  • Time management
  • Task initiation
  • Focus and attention control
  • Problem-solving
  • Emotional regulation

Moreover, according to the American Psychological Association, executive functioning skills are critical predictors of academic achievement and long-term success. Through practices, rehearsals, deadlines, and teamwork, children naturally strengthen these abilities.

Beyond Sports: Expanding Opportunities

Extracurricular activities are not limited to athletics, and that is something I always like to remind fellow moms. There are so many different paths our children can explore based on their interests and strengths. From arts programs and museum teen clubs to STEM and robotics teams, debate groups, leadership organizations, and community service initiatives, the opportunities are wide and varied. For example, my oldest daughter is really into baking. Therefore, I have been on the hunt, the last two years, for cooking camps and opportunities for her to tap into that outlet. The goal is not to fit our children into a box, but to give them space to discover what sparks their curiosity and confidence.

In many cases, these experiences can lead to opportunities we did not initially see coming. What starts as exploration can turn into direction, and that is the beauty of it. When we expose our children to different environments, we are not just keeping them busy; we are helping them build a future full of possibilities.

Sometimes, the Bonus Is Financial

Sometimes… but not all the times, the bonus is financial. Some extracurricular paths can lead to scholarships or financial support for higher education. The National Collegiate Athletic Association reports that more than $3.5 billion in athletic scholarships are awarded each year across Division I and II schools alone. Beyond sports, merit-based scholarships tied to leadership, community service, music, and STEM participation are widely available through universities and national organizations. Research from the National Center for Education Statistics shows that students who are actively engaged in extracurricular activities are more likely to pursue post secondary education and persist through completion. These opportunities are not just about talent, but about consistency, commitment, and demonstrated involvement over time.

That said, the true value of extracurricular participation extends far beyond financial gain. Even when scholarships are not part of the outcome, the long-term return is still significant. Studies supported by the American Psychological Association highlight that students involved in structured activities tend to develop stronger executive functioning, leadership abilities, and social-emotional skills. These competencies translate into higher academic performance, increased college readiness, and stronger career outcomes. Employers consistently rank skills like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving among the most critical, and these are often cultivated outside the classroom. So while a scholarship may be the visible reward, the invisible return, the growth, discipline, and confidence, is what truly carries our children forward into adulthood.

To Wrap it Up

Let’s just say, I am that MOM! I firmly believe in keeping my kids involved in activities. The cost can be extensive, but the reward is also great. Not just in potential financial gain, but in the life skills gained along the journey. Honestly, this type of investment usually pays off in ways that can’t be seen. When we shift our mindset from short-term costs to long-term impact, extracurricular activities become one of the most meaningful investments we can make. In Part 3, we’ll explore how these activities contribute to overall wellness—supporting our children physically, mentally, and emotionally while enhancing their academic performance.
