For me, summer break is not over yet, but I know many families who are preparing to return to school. My children are on a traditional calendar, and although we’d like summer break to last forever, back-to-school is inevitable for us as well. As a new school year quickly approaches, many moms are shopping for supplies, organizing schedules, and preparing our children for another year of learning. I too will be gearing up for the same in just a bit. While backpacks, lunch boxes, and new shoes are important, I’ve recognized over the years that the greatest back-to-school send-off we can give our children is covering them in prayer. In today’s blog post, I am sharing five powerful scriptures to pray over your children as they head back to school.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

The Lord is with us wherever we go…

One of the greatest comforts we can give our children is the reminder that they are never alone. As my family prepares for a new school year, two of my children are transitioning to new schools. While this season brings excitement, it also comes with uncertainty. But I want them to know that what feels unfamiliar to them is never unfamiliar to God. My prayer is that they won’t allow fear to keep them from embracing the opportunities ahead. Instead, I pray they will see this new season as a chance to grow in confidence, build meaningful friendships, discover new gifts, and blossom into the young men and women God has called them to be. Joshua 1:9 reminds us, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” That promise isn’t just for our children. It is for us as parents, too. We can release our worries, knowing that even when we cannot be by their side, the Lord is with them in every classroom, every conversation, every challenge, and every victory.

Pray for Wisdom

Scripture

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

School is filled with decisions. From choosing the right friends to making good choices in the classroom, our children need God’s wisdom every day. We can trust that when we ask, He faithfully provides it.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I pray that You would fill my child with wisdom throughout this school year. Help them make good decisions, listen to their teachers, and respond with kindness and integrity. Give them understanding when lessons seem difficult and confidence to ask for help when needed. May they seek Your wisdom above everything else. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Pray for Courage

God’s promise reminds us that our children never walk into school alone. He is always with them. God is also with us, so we don’t have to worry from day to day. How comforting is that??

Prayer

Lord, give my child courage as they begin this new school year. Remove fear and replace it with confidence in You. Help them face new experiences with boldness, knowing You are by their side every step of the way. Let Your presence bring them peace wherever they go. Amen.

Pray for Protection

“The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”

There is so much going on in the world today. Every time I turn on the news, there are ample sad and tragic stories that fill the airways and news outlets. It can be overwhelming and a bit depressing. As parents, we cannot be with our children every moment of the day, but God can. My prayer is always that the Lord protects them.

Prayer

Father, I ask for Your divine protection over my child each day. Watch over them as they travel to and from school. Guard their mind, body, and heart. Protect them from harm, unhealthy influences, bullying, and anything that would distract them from Your purpose. Surround them with Your angels and keep them safe. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Pray for Kindness and Meaningful Friendships

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
Ephesians 4:32 (NIV)

Friendships can shape a child’s confidence and character. Pray that your children not only find good friends but also become the kind of friend who reflects the love of Christ.

Prayer

Lord, help my child to be kind, compassionate, and respectful to everyone they meet. Lead them to friendships that encourage them to grow in faith and character. Give them discernment to recognize healthy relationships and the courage to stand apart when necessary. May they reflect Your love through their words and actions. Amen.

Pray Their Light Shines Bright

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Matthew 5:16 (NIV)

I may be aging myself, but growing up, we used to sing “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine…” Those simple words carry a powerful reminder that our faith isn’t meant to be hidden and our outward conduct should reflect our inward beliefs.

Prayer

Father, let my child’s life shine brightly for You this school year. Help them be honest, loving, respectful, and encouraging to those around them. Use them to bring hope and kindness into their classrooms. May everything they do point others to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I pray that this blog post is your reminder and encouragement to cover your children in prayer. In fact, let’s cover OUR children in prayer. Take a moment to pray for the children in your community, at your schools, and just children in general. We are in a time and space where prayer is much needed. Every prayer we pray is an act of faith, placing our children into the hands of a loving Father who knows them, goes before them, and promises to never leave them.
