Hey, Mom, I’m sure you already know how to plan. You’ve watched the YouTube videos, pinned the aesthetic planner spreads, maybe even bought a new planner (or three). And if you are like me, you have your top planner brands’ websites saved as favorites in your browser. The real struggle isn’t knowing what to do. It’s actually planning consistently when life is pulling you in twelve different directions at once. If you started strong in January and then completely abandoned your planner by March, you’re not alone. And no, it doesn’t mean you’re bad at planning. It means your system probably wasn’t built for your actual life. In today’s blog post, I am sharing simple, realistic planning habits designed to help busy working moms stay organized, focused, and intentional every day.

Start With “Why” Before You Plan Anything

Before you open your planner, get clear on why you’re planning in the first place. Not in a vague “I want to be more organized” way. Be very specific and personal with your why. If you are budget planning, ask yourself, “Why am I budget planning?” Is it to hit a savings target, purchase a home, pay off debt, etc.? I’ve found that if my why is bigger than me, I will stick to my goals. I had a plan to complete my Doctorate, and the why behind it was far bigger than me, which allowed me to overcome obstacles, stick to the plan, and complete the degree. The plan included asking for support, creating a strict yet fluid study routine, and planning my months more consistently to get ahead of scheduling conflicts. Plan with Purpose

When your planning has a purpose tied to something that matters to you, it stops feeling like a chore and starts feeling like a tool. It becomes a way to push your goals and tasks forward. Even if you miss a day or two, you still have a go-to to check back in. Planning with purpose gives your goals direction, not just your day. It connects your daily to-dos to your bigger vision, so even the small tasks feel meaningful.

Keep Your Planning Routine Embarrassingly Simple

The biggest mistake most moms make is building a planning routine that only works when they have 45 uninterrupted minutes and a hot cup of coffee. Real life doesn’t work that way. Often, planning happens on the go or in the early morning hours before the kids wake up. Your daily planning routine should take 10 minutes or less. That’s it. Here’s a simple structure that works:

  1. Morning (5 minutes): Look at your calendar, pick your top 3 priorities for the day, and write them down. Just three, no matter how tempting it is to add more. If you only get those three done, the day was a win.
  2. Evening (5 minutes): Do a quick brain dump of anything still floating in your head, check tomorrow’s schedule, and close out the day. This helps you actually disconnect instead of mentally running through tomorrow’s to-do list at midnight.

How to get to this point…

I know you are probably thinking, “How do I get to a point where I am keeping my daily planning routine this simple”?

To get to this place, I advise you to set aside time twice a year for goal-setting and vision-casting. I’ve seen this done in several ways and have changed it up a bit myself. At one point, I would have more elaborate planning sessions before the start of a new year. helped me dream big and map out what I wanted my next season to look like. See the video below for more details. Mid-year, I will have a planning session to wrap up the summer and kick-start the upcoming school year. This is helpful because I am able to level-set in advance of the school year, focus on kids’ activities, and mitigate potential conflicts between my personal and professional schedules.

Another opportunity is to have someone coach you through planning. This is a service that I offer! Working with a planning coach takes the guesswork out of the process and replaces it with clarity, structure, and accountability, even when life gets busy. Instead of staring at a blank page wondering where to start, you’re guided through a proven approach that helps you define your priorities, break down your goals, and build a plan that actually fits your life. With coaching, you also gain perspective. Sometimes you’re too close to your own life to see what’s working and what needs to shift. Having someone like me walk alongside you helps you uncover blind spots, challenge limiting habits, and stay focused.

This is exactly why I LOVE offering Plan with Purpose as a service. It’s designed to help you move from feeling overwhelmed and reactive to being more intentional. You don’t just walk away with a plan—you walk away with a strategy, a system, and the confidence to execute it.

In Conclusion…

Planning as a working mom should be about being intentional with the time and energy you actually have. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with fancy bells and whistles and trends. These things are not sustainable. Don’t get me wrong, when time permits, the trends are fun to follow along, but only when you have free time. Moreover, consistency doesn’t mean every day goes smoothly or that your planner looks Instagram-worthy. It means you keep coming and moving forward even after setbacks. It means that even after a week where everything fell apart, you sit down on Sunday night and plan for the days ahead. Similarly, you follow the simple tips mentioned above to stay on track.
