Planning With Purpose: Wisdom and Insights

By: Dr. Debranetta, Mom, Strategist, Researcher, Chief of Staff

In today’s blog post, I am going to be amplifying one of my favorite YouTube videos. In this video, I discuss five types of planning you should consider incorporating into your life. While we can’t predict every twist and turn, we can choose to prepare for them. That’s where planning comes in. These planning types help you create roadmaps or structure that, in turn, helps you stay focused yet open to God’s leading.

Some people may feel that making plans shows a lack of faith, but Scripture paints a different picture. God is a God of purpose, order, and preparation. Throughout the Bible, we see examples of just that. Planning with purpose is an outward demonstration of our commitment to excellence and order.

The Types of Planning Work Together…

Here’s what I’ve learned: planning looks different in every season, but it always comes back to being intentional with what you’ve been given.

I am not suggesting that you master each of the 5 areas below. My goal is to share these categories with you so that you can identify quick wins and ways to enhance your and your family’s day-to-day flow. Honestly, if you tried to overhaul your budget, your career plan, your meals, your big vision, and your daily schedule all in the same week, you’d probably end up more overwhelmed than when you started.

The various types of planning (5 of which I will explain below) can work together. Think about it from a back-to-school perspective. Say your strategic plan is to make this school year feel more organized than last year. Therefore, you make trade-offs in terms of extracurricular activities and explore tutoring and other needs. Your monthly and weekly planning is what will keep everything on track.  That is where the planning and trade-offs come alive. Your meal planning becomes especially important here too, since having lunches and after-school snacks figured out ahead of time saves you from scrambling every single morning. And your daily plan is what carries you through the actual routine, giving everyone — including you — a less chaotic day-to-day experience.

Essentially, one area of planning creates the space for the next one to actually happen. That’s the real power of planning with purpose.

5 Key Types of Planning for Working Moms

  1. Budgeting
  2. Career/Professional Development
  3. Meal Planning
  4. Strategic Planning
  5. Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Planning

Here is a quick overview of these types of planning. A budget plan helps you understand where your money is going, set savings goals, and reduce unnecessary spending. Without one, it’s easy to spend based on what feels urgent instead of intentionally. Next, a career deserves that same intentionality as other types of planning. This can take a million different shapes. It all depends on your professional development goals. Whether you’re advancing, pivoting, or returning to the workforce, a career plan built around your goals, skills, and networking helps you move strategically instead of just hoping things work out. When I made career transitions, I created a specific plan of action for the first 90 days and beyond. Opportunity often requires preparation before it arrives, in the midst of it, and after to evaluate and gain insights.

Then there’s the question that gets asked almost daily: “What are we eating?” Meal planning removes stress from busy schedules by helping you organize meals. It’s a system that makes life less chaotic.

Zoom out, and strategic planning turns your bigger vision into action. It means defining your goal, the outcome you want, and the milestones to get there. Instead of just working harder, you start working with intention. To me, my strategic plan brings my long-term aspirations together. It has implications for my time, my budget, and my daily life.

Finally, daily, weekly, and monthly planning ties it all together. A daily plan helps you focus on today, a weekly plan organizes your priorities, and a monthly plan shows you the bigger picture, connecting your everyday actions to your bigger purpose.

To Wrap It Up

These types of planning have been very helpful for me over the years. I may not focus heavily on each of them all the time, but they are my go-to planning types. When life gets a bit disorganized and just “lifes”, I pause and revisit my planning techniques and cadence. Let me know in the comments what your go-to planning type is!
