Ways to keep the faith when dealing with career uncertainly
Over the years my career has gone through peeks and valleys. There have been years when I have absolutely loved everything about my work and environment. Similarly, there have been times when I’ve had to pray, or even fast, my way through. It was during those valley moments that I learned how to trust God with my career.
Career uncertainty can take several shapes and mean something different for each career mom. Job dissatisfaction can lead to uncertainty as well as company performance. Here is some common job dissatisfaction that I have observed and/or experienced:
- Lack of meaningful work
- Toxic work environment
- Lack of appreciation and feeling valued
- Poor management
- Limited growth opportunities
Here are also some ways that company performance leads to uncertainty:
- Lower morale
- High turnover
- Change in compensation and benefits
All of these scenarios and more can lead to feeling uneasy about one’s current career.
My personal journey

I’ve personally experienced a mix of emotions throughout my career journey. Thankfully nothing has drastically impacted my career confidence or overall well-being. I’ll take moment to acknowledge that this may not be the case for some women professionals and working mothers.
At one point in my career, I didn’t know if I was going or coming from day to day. It was in those moments that I tried everything possible to cope and deal with uncertainty after transition and severe dissatisfaction. I kept a journal at my desk and each day I wrote down something I was grateful for just to boost my personal more. It worked until I was able to land something new.
There was also a time when I experienced leadership that “managed up” and was severely disconnected from the team. It caused undue stress and ample frustration. To navigate this journey I prayed my way out. I kept my focus on what I could control and leaned into mentor relationships as I navigated my way to another opportunity.
How to Trust God with Your Career
Overall, I have learned, and am learning to trust God with my career. To me, putting my trust in God is the ultimate way to remain at peace regardless of any situation.
It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.
Psalm 118:8 (KJV)
Practical ways to put trust in God concerning your career are to:
- Pray
- Gain clarity
- Focus on
- Keep pushing
Prayer is key. It got me through a number of different struggles. Prayer and doing the work to move my situation forward from uncertainty to a sense of stability.
I hope this encouraged you to put your trust in God as you navigate your career journey.
