How to Manage a Busy Schedule and Motherhood

I’ve learned that it’s important for me to manage my schedule and my life in order to make time for my goals and my self-care. Here's what I've learned.

Organization and time management tips for working moms

Staying organized as a busy mom can be challenging.  I find myself constantly evaluating the systems that I have in place as the seasons of life change and as my kids grow older.  What worked for me five years ago is no longer relevant.  I’ve taken on a leadership role, new responsibilities, and my kids are more active.  Simply put, my schedule can be a moving target. I’ve learned that it’s important for me to manage my busy schedule and my life in order to make time for my goals and my self-care.

Why it’s important to manage a busy schedule

Planning has proven to be super beneficial these days.  When I think back to the days when I lacked planning I get stressed just thinking about my stress levels during those times.  I was constantly on the move but getting nowhere with my goals.  Not to mention the lack of self-care.

In all transparency, my health was not at its best. You see, we are not designed to run a million miles a minute day in and day out.  Think about driving your car at full speed constantly.  It will break down because it was not designed for that.  Hats off to you if you drive a fuel-efficient race car, love.  I highly doubt that my Traverse is designed to live that life.

Managing a busy schedule should be intentional and based on what is best for us and our families in the current season.  If it isn’t, you open the door to frustration and wasted time.

Organization and time management tips

I always encourage moms to plan holistically.  Trust me, I’ve been there.  I’d dabble in meal planning one day, plan my business activities in a bubble, then hop over to plan out my kids’ activities.   It was pure madness.  I experienced conflicts that could have been avoided and the added stress of booking a call minutes before we needed to leave for an event.

I’m not saying that planning totally absolves us from experiencing scheduling conflicts; what it does is give us an opportunity to prevent conflicts and impediments ahead of time.

Not only does scheduling conflicts cause stress, it does also cause disorganization and clutter. I’m getting better at creating a weekly chore routine that fits well with our schedule.  I encourage you to set a routine but to also account for and on-off deviations.

Holistically, the beauty in planning is that it gives you the ability to manage both your schedule and your life.

Prioritize Self-Care

Earlier, I mentioned that I went through a season of stress and that my health suffered.  I don’t want that to happen to you.  In my digital self-care goal-setting planner, I talk about the different types of self-care.  It’s important to make self-care a part of our daily routine.  It should be a priority and not a once-and-done weekly activity.

When you are thinking about self-care, remember this acronym, MOM, Maximize Opportunities, and Momentum.  Take advantage of small moments to breathe, reflect, and recharge.

To Wrap it Up

We’ve all heard the saying, “rule your day or your day will rule you”.  Don’t let your day get the best of you no matter how busy it may become.  Have a plan and prioritize what matters most at the moment.  Most importantly, prioritize your well-being.
