Simple and Effective Self-Care for Moms

Self-Care can include a wide range of personalized activities that rejuvenate and refresh your mind, body and soul.

I conducted a Career Mom Community survey in 2019 and 55% of the moms who took the survey shared that they struggle with self-care.  I can only imagine what the survey results would reveal today as we are in the middle of a pandemic that has turned our lives upside down.

Self-care is an important part of wellness and helps to prevent illness.  Remaining consistent with self-care is often difficult for moms, as confirmed by the community survey. For some moms, self-care is often an afterthought.   For others, they feel as though they don’t have the time or resources for self-care.

I’ll let you in on a little secret.  There are several simple and effective ways to practice self-care.

Simple and effect ways to practice self-care include:

1) Exercise

Quick 15 minute routines in between breaks is a great place to start.

Get creative While the kids are outside running and playing, join in because it all counts.
Keep it simple – if you’re not a workout wiz, keep it simple and workout at home to a quick YouTube video or tutorial. There are a ton of fun options to choose from.

2) Increase Water Intake

Hydration is great for maintaining healthy glowing skin.  For us tired moms, hydration is a great way to keep under eye bags away.

Get creative – Add various fruits and herbs to your water for vibrancy. Keep it simple – Keep a filled reusable water batter on hand throughout the day, #noexcuses.

3) Quiet time

This includes prayer, meditation, and moments of stillness.

Get creative – Create a prayer closet.  Make sure your family knows that when you are in your prayer closet, do not disturb.
Keep it simple – Turn off distractions, put up a do not disturb sign, and put the phone away.

4) Get Some Rest

Mommy burnout is real.  Find time to rest your body and your mind.

Get creative – Create a relaxing bedtime routine that allows for an appropriate amount of sleep each night.
Keep it simple If you have small kids, rest when they are napping.  If you have older kids implement family quiet time where you all rest and recharge.

5) Read

Reading is a great way to expand our minds as well as take our minds off any personal stresses.

Get creative – Read a book while the kids are playing, read while you are waiting for them to finish up an activity/class, or listen to audio books.
Keep it simple – Listen to audio books.

6) Spa Day

This is a classic and go to form of self-care.  Spas and salons are a great source of relaxation.

Get creative – have an in-home spa day and DIY you facial, nails and massage.
Keep it simple – take a relaxing salt bath with relaxing music playing in the background.

7) Enjoy Nature

The great outdoors is so therapeutic and relaxing.  Being outside it a great source of vitamin D and fresh air is great for our lungs.

Get creative find a quiet place to relax by yourself at the park.
Keep it simple – enjoy your own backyard!

8) Find a Hobby

My hobby is planning. It is my way of staying organized but also my way to tap into my creative side with the use of planner stickers and accessories.  It’s fun and therapeutic. What’s your hobby?

Get creative – coloring is a great hobby and it’s also relaxing.
Keep it simple – tap into your childhood hobbies and the things you’ve always enjoyed.
