How working moms can increase focus and productivity
Can I be transparent? I am coming out of a brief season where I lacked focus. As a result, my productivity suffered. I was not focused at work nor in my business and my task list went from one page to two pages, and subsequently 3 pages with mostly unchecked items. On the outside, all looked well, but we all know the reality of that. Things are not always what they appear! In today’s blog post, I am sharing a bit of my story with the hope of helping my fellow working moms maintain focus and productivity.
My Struggle with Focus and Productivity
When I noticed my to-do list piling up, I had to examine my life to determine why. Not only was my to-do list getting long but I was not motivated to do anything about it. I pushed tasks off and struggled to do meaningful work. Insert aimless social media strolling (sigh). Yes, the ultimate planner mom was on the struggle bus.
My focus was all over the place. When I started to examine my life, I realized I was constantly thinking and overthinking about future events. These future events that were consuming my mind were far beyond my immediate control. They were indeed important, but not important for the moment.
Sometimes we lose focus not because we want to but because life sends us down a path where we have competing priorities and various circumstances vying for our attention. On the flip side, there are times when we get distracted due to current events, trendy Tik Toks, and the likes. The moment our focus is hindered our productivity starts to decline.
Maintaining Focus in Every Area of Our Lives
We should maintain focus in every area of our lives. One way to maintain focus is to minimize distractions.
In our personal lives, we can:
- Set aside time for a digital detox
- Plan and maintain a healthy scheduling routine
- Find a calming environment to refuel
- Maintain an organized workspace
In our workplaces, we can:
- Find work spaces (coffee shops, co-working spaces, or conference rooms at work) that enable you to focus
- Create systems to avoid interruptions while working
- Time box “chatter”
- Stay on schedule

Benefits of Staying Focused
I’m sure the benefits of staying focused have become more evident by now. The top three benefits that I will emphasize are:
- Efficient Resource Allocation
How often do we say, “I just don’t have the time”. When we are more focused we are better equipped to allocate our time purposefully and intentionally
2) Focus minimizes distractions
Have you ever been so laser-focused that you tune out everything going on around you? Being focused minimizes distractions and when we minimize distractions we can better focus on the tasks at hand. It is a highly reciprocal relationship.
3) Quality of work improves
Focus is a fundamental element in achieving excellence and improving the quality of work.
