Back to School Transition: Planning for the School Year
3 Essential Routines
Here are three essential routines to help make the back-to-school transition smoother and more manageable. These routines are necessary not only for back-to-school but also for life, regardless of the phase of life we are in.

Morning Routines
I’ll admit my morning routine is not consistent. It does, however, have a default flow. This means having a set of activities that I follow regardless of when I wake up. It looks different some mornings, but overall, it works out. My goal is to be a part of the 4am club, 5am at the latest. But depending on when my night winds down, which depends on the day and kids activities, this varies. Not to mention, some days, I’m just sleepy.
Studies show that a consistent morning routine ensures that everyone starts the day on the right foot. A well-structured morning routine reduces the rush and stress of getting out the door on time.
Here’s where planning steps in. When I plan my week I factor in scheduling needs. For example, I’m committed to joining a 6am weekly prayer call. This means being more proactive with my kids lunch prep and attire. The call ends at 7 am which is about 10 minutes before we head out the door.
Another example is the week of school; for me, I typically go up to my eyeballs in articles to read. I wake up early AND stay up late getting work finalized.
For moms who must follow a semi-structured routine, I see you, and I feel you. In this instance, having a default flow is helpful. As mentioned above, I’ve found it beneficial to have some consistency with the specific days or flow. For example, I encourage my kids to have a rhythm, make the bed, wash, brush their teeth, etc. This has proven to be helpful.
After-school Routines, which Includes Homework
This routine helps children transition from school mode to home life. It typically includes unpacking backpacks, having a healthy snack, and starting homework. Incorporating some downtime or outdoor play can also help children recharge before diving into homework or other activities.
Moreover, establishing a designated time and place for homework helps children stay focused and on track. This routine should include gathering all necessary materials beforehand, minimizing distractions, and setting clear expectations for completing assignments. A consistent homework routine fosters good study habits and reduces procrastination.
Bedtime Routines
As mentioned above, this is an area in which I struggle. I’ve taken steps to create an wind down routine but sometimes, I’ll admit to watching a YouTube video until I fall asleep. The ASMR options are endless. But I digress and acknowledge it’s not the best approach for me personally. Following a consistent bedtime routine is a great practice for moms and kids, offering benefits beyond just a good night’s sleep.
For children, a soothing bedtime routine serves as a cue that the day is coming to a close, making it simpler for them to unwind and drift off to sleep. This routine, which can involve activities like reading a book, taking a warm bath, or listening to calming music, all contribute to relaxation and prepare the ground for a restful sleep. Sufficient sleep is a cornerstone of children’s physical and mental growth, aiding them in being more attentive, alert, and emotionally stable during the day.
For moms, a bedtime routine is not just a time for children to wind down but also a crucial opportunity to de-stress and practice self-care. After a long day of balancing work, family, and other responsibilities, having a set time to relax can significantly reduce stress and improve overall well-being. It also helps in establishing a regular sleep pattern, which is important for maintaining energy levels and emotional health. Additionally, a bedtime routine can strengthen the bond between moms and their children, creating a special time for connection through bedtime stories, conversations, or simply being together as the day ends.
To Wrap it Up
Incorporating routines into your life supports overall well-being and day-to-day life management. I’m not writing this post as someone who has mastered routines but as a mom who is striving to be better each day. The flow I have created works well for my family and allows the right mix of flexibility and efficiency. Let me know in the comments what your go-to routines are.
