We don’t always get slow mornings, but we can still start strong – Dr. Debranetta
As a working mom, my mornings rarely look like a Pinterest board. It’s actually far from it. Some days start with school lunches, and some days start with emails. Not to mention the morning calls if I have to meet with my team in other regions of the world. Other days begin with a morning prayer call and a cup of coffee. I’ve learned that how I start my day doesn’t have to be perfect, but it should be purposeful. Here are three ways I jump-start my day that help me feel grounded, focused, and ready to handle whatever comes my way.
Jump start before you jump in
I’ve learned that taking just a few intentional moments before jumping into the hustle can make all the difference. Nearly 70% of moms say they feel overwhelmed by their responsibilities.

Busy doesn’t have to mean chaotic
Here are three ways I’ve learned to jump-start my day before I jump into the chaos.
- Start with Stillness — Not Scrolling
- Choose Your One Thing
- Speak Life Over Your Day
First, before you check your phone, check in with God. I will admit, I struggle in this area. Some days are better than others because I join a weekly prayer call that gives me cause to start my day in this manner. Waking up and immediately diving into emails or social media causes you to be overwhelmed before your feet even hit the floor. My goal is to make a habit of starting my day with stillness: a quick prayer, a deep breath, or reading a verse that grounds me. It’s my way of saying, “God, You lead. I’ll follow.”
Scripture to anchor this: “At each and every sunrise you will hear my voice as I prepare my sacrifice of prayer to you. Every morning I lay out the pieces of my life on the altar and wait for your fire to fall upon my heart.” — Psalm 5:3 (TPT)
This scripture reminds me that I don’t need to hustle for clarity. I just need to make room for it more often.
Second, on busy days, everything feels important. But not everything is urgent. We should keep this in mind as we’re planning. I’ve started asking myself one question in the morning: “What’s the one thing I need to move forward today?” It might be finishing a key work project, having a heart-to-heart with one of my kids, or just drinking water and getting to bed on time. That one thing helps me focus my efforts and keeps me from being overwhelmed.
Remaining focused is a form of grace-driven productivity. It encourages progress with purpose. – Dr. Debranetta
Lastly, some morning, you’ll have to literally speak life over your day. It doesn’t have to be fancy — sometimes I whisper scripture to myself while brushing my teeth or declare:
“I am calm. I am capable. I am covered.”
Speaking life shifts your heart posture and sets the tone for everything that follows.
Scripture to anchor this: Joel 3:10 (KJV):
“Let the weak say, I am strong.”
This verse encourages you to declare truth and strength, even when you don’t feel it.
To Wrap it Up
To jump-start your day with intention, begin with stillness—take a few quiet moments for prayer or reflection before checking your phone or diving into responsibilities. Then, choose one meaningful priority to focus on so you’re moving with purpose, not just reacting to everything that comes your way. Finally, speak life over your day by declaring truth, affirmations, or scripture to ground your mindset and set the tone before the world gets loud.
